With more than 300 miles of scenic shoreline dotted with bustling harbors and quiet coves, Door County, WI next to Lake Michigan, offers a wealth of scenery and entertainment. Door County is one of the top destinations in the United States year after year.
Day 1: Departing Yoder this morning, we head north where our first night is in Coralville, IA. Enjoy getting acquainted as we anticipate the fun adventures ahead in Door County, Wisconsin.
Day 2: Today we continue northeast across Iowa and Wisconsin. By mid-afternoon, we arrive in Sturgeon Bay, the gateway to Door County. We meet our local step-on guide, who is with us each day in Door County. First, we make our way to the Bay Shipping Canal, hopefully catching a glimpse of a lake freighter as it passes through the canal. We also have a picture stop at a wooden cross telling the words to the hymn “The Old Rugged Cross” written at this church over a hundred years ago. We will check in to our hotel for a three-night stay in Door County. (B, D)
Day 3: Today features a full day on Washington Island, situated at the northern tip of Door County. After our ferry ride, where Green Bay and Lake Michigan meet, enjoy the slower pace of “Island Time.” We visit Washington Harbor and Schoolhouse Beach, the site of the first log schoolhouse on the Island. This stone beach with deep, clear, blue waters, has sheltered many a ship and small vessel in storms. We tour the Farm Museum which offers a glimpse into the unique history of farming in Door County. Then we head to Mann’s Mercantile to shop like the locals. Our next stop is at Nelson’s Hall to join the Bitters Club… if you’d like. We visit Stav Church, a wonderful example of the history and presence of Norwegians who settled in this area. Later, we visit Seaquist Orchards Farm Market for a tour of this popular cherry orchard. After dinner, the rest of the evening is free to enjoy the resort’s picturesque setting. (B, L)
Day 4: This morning we visit scenic Cave Point, one of the most photographed areas in Door County. A walking trail leads us down to Lake Michigan to take in the view. Later we have a guided tour of the handcrafted Norwegian Bjorklunden Chapel. Our lunch stop is at a Swedish family-owned restaurant (Al Johnson’s) where, if you are lucky, you can find goats grazing on the sod roof. This afternoon embark on an adventure sailing along the Bay with views of Eagle Bluff Lighthouse, Peninsula State Park, and Eagle Cave. Tonight, we enjoy an authentic Fish Boil, just like the Scandinavian settlers of old. The fresh, locally caught whitefish are cooked outside over an open fire. (B, L, D)
Day 5: This morning we depart Door County for the capital city of Madison. Enjoy a walking tour of Olbrich Botanical Gardens. They claim to have the only Thai Garden in the United States and the only one outside of Thailand surrounded by a garden. We explore other specialty gardens such as the Perennial Garden, Sunken Garden, and Herb Garden. During our next stop, we take a ride on the Fenelon Place Elevator. This historic elevator is also known as the shortest, steepest, scenic railway, spanning 296 feet in length. The views from the top are spectacular, overlooking the Mississippi River. Continuing west, our last night is in Coralville, IA. (B, L)
Day 6: Today we return to Yoder reminiscing about the scenic harbors and quiet coves of Door County! (B)
