Concordia Day Trip

A local guide shows us around the sites of Concordia, Kansas. Our first stop is at the Whole Wall Mural where we learn how the longest sculpted brick mural in the US was constructed. The 140’ brick wall depicts the history of Cloud County. We visit the National Orphan Train Museum to learn about the stories of children being sent west, speaking no English, with their names pinned to their clothes in hopes of finding a home. During WWII the War Department constructed POW camps all over the US. Sixteen camps were located in Kansas. The largest was built north of Concordia and housed 4,000 German prisoners and 1,000 military and civilian staff. This afternoon we also tour the beautifully restored Brown Grand Theater, built in the late 1800s by then-banker Napoleon Bonaparte Brown. He saw the need to accommodate the growing number of traveling entertainers en route from Denver and St. Louis. (L)
