Palo Duro/TEXAS Musical
Day 1: As we board the coach, we eagerly wait to see some of the natural beauty our country has to offer. Watch the landscape change as we travel through the desert panhandle of Oklahoma to the canyon country of the southern plains. We make our way to Amarillo for the next two nights where rugged cowboy culture meets big city sophistication. (L, D)
Day 2: This morning, we have a tour at Cal Farley's Boys Ranch. Nestled in the rolling hills, the ranch is a residential community open to at-risk children. After lunch, we head to the Kwahadi Museum of the American Indian for a chance to witness an authentic dance performance. We also visit the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum. Relive the stories of courage and hardship, victory and defeat over the past 14,000 years. Step back to the Old West in a life-size Pioneer Town. This evening, we descend to the floor of the Palo Duro Canyon which becomes the backdrop for the “TEXAS” Musical. After our meal, we enjoy the open-air theater for the impressive outdoor musical drama. A lone horseman, carrying the flag of the great state of Texas, appears atop a 600-foot cliff, signaling the beginning of the musical. With a moving swell of the music, the horseman gallops away. Suddenly, a cast of more than 60 actors, singers, and dancers takes the stage to kick off the show. What an amazing show! Back to the hotel for a night's rest. (B, L, D)
Day 3: Today a step-on guide joins us for a city tour of Amarillo. The tour also includes a visit to the Route 66 Historical District. Developed as an early 20th century streetcar hub, the district represents the most intact collection of commercial buildings associated with the Routes heyday. After an early lunch, it’s time to head back to familiar land. (B)
